School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Students Win Multiple Honors at the 7th National Geographic Science Exhibition Competition

On October 27, the national finals of the "New Ant Tribe Cup" 7th National Geographic Science Exhibition Competition, organized by the Geographical Society of China and the School of Geography and Planning at Sun Yat-sen University, successfully concluded at Hunan Normal University. Students from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Lanzhou University—Yan Bijiao, Liu Xanyu, Liu Yuxuan, Zhang Yukun, and Jiang Zizhen—under the guidance of Associate Professor Wang Meimei, stood out among 80 teams nationwide, winning the Grand Prize in the Human Geography category, the Most Academic Theme Award, and the Excellent Organization Award. Team member Jiang Zizhen also received the Best Male Performer Award.

This year's competition focused on the theme "Geographical Discoveries Nurturing National Sentiment," aiming to guide and encourage undergraduate students in geography to combine their exploration at the international disciplinary forefront with the major strategic needs of the country and the goals of regional socio-economic development. The initiative seeks to fully utilize geography's inherent strengths in fostering national sentiment, interdisciplinary collaboration, comprehensive thinking, harmony between humans and nature, and practical application, encouraging participants to engage in personal observation, research, analysis, and empirical studies to scientifically and systematically understand our beautiful homeland, resonate with the pulse of the new era, assist in high-quality development, and promote geography's contributions to accelerating modernization in China.

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Lanzhou University has always attached great importance to cultivating undergraduates' research capabilities and practical innovation skills. The school regards talent development as its fundamental mission, conducting in-depth research and exploration in areas such as innovation in training objectives and models, curriculum design, teaching methods, and approaches. The school actively encourages undergraduates to participate in various academic competitions and fosters high-level academic exchanges and international cooperation, creating a favorable atmosphere for high-quality talent cultivation.

The Dream Weavers Team prepared for the competition over a period of seven months, traveling from Lanzhou to Changsha, and achieved fruitful results. Associate Professor Wang Meimei commented, “Using research projects to drive student engagement and academic competitions to motivate them is a very effective training approach. The Dream Weavers Team repeatedly refined their results and demonstrated them multiple times, which led to excellent team spirit and coordination during the competition, showcasing the professionalism, scientific rigor, and systematic approach of Lanzhou University students in research.” Team leader Yan Bijiao stated, “This is my second time participating in the National Geographic Science Exhibition Competition. I am honored to qualify for the finals again this year and exchange ideas with excellent teams and peers from across the country. Our team began preparing for the competition in March, collecting and processing data, constructing models, publishing papers, and preparing PowerPoint presentations and speeches. Each step relied on close collaboration among team members. In the future, we will continue to conduct in-depth research, make solid progress, and keep learning.” Team member Liu Xanyu also remarked, “The exhibition competition provides a platform for geography students from different universities to showcase and exchange ideas. We took it step by step from Lanzhou to Changsha, learning from the outstanding achievements of other universities, which greatly broadened our horizons and enhanced our research capabilities.”、
