Zhang Qiang is a Senior Inspector/Chief Engineer/Associate Researcher at the Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau, Chairman of the Gansu Meteorological Society, Director of the Drought Meteorology Professional Committee of the Chinese Meteorological Society, and Director of the Key Laboratory of Drought Climate Change and Disaster Reduction at the China Meteorological Administration. He also serves as a doctoral supervisor and postdoctoral collaborative mentor at Fudan University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, and the China Meteorological Science Research Institute. He is the editor-in-chief of the journal "Drought Meteorology," the deputy editor of "Plateau Meteorology," and serves on the editorial board of various academic journals, including "Meteorological Journal."
Zhang has long been engaged in research on drought meteorology, land-atmosphere interactions, and regional climate change. He has led and completed 13 national-level projects, including the National "973" Program, the National Science and Technology Support Program, national key projects, and major projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation. He has published more than ten monographs or edited volumes, and has authored over 240 high-level papers as the first or corresponding author, with his works cited more than 20,000 times, and several papers rated as high-impact. His achievements have earned over 20 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards, including one second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award and six first-class provincial and ministerial awards. His work has also been recognized as one of the Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in China's Ecological Environment in 2022 and received two outstanding meteorological scientific and technological achievements awards from the China Meteorological Administration. He has personally received honors and awards including the First National Innovation Award, the Fifth Outstanding Engineer Award, and the National Excellent Scientific and Technological Worker Award. He has been selected as a national-level talent of the New Century Hundred Thousand and Ten Thousand Project, the Scientific Chinese Annual Figure, a first-level leading talent in Gansu Province, one of the first batch of experts in the spirit of Chinese scientists by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, and a first batch of popular science experts in Gansu Province.
