On September 23 and 30, 2024, Researcher Kang Shichang, Vice President of the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Cryosphere Science, delivered a course titled "Introduction to Cryosphere Science" to the undergraduate students of the Class of 2022 at the Yuzhong Campus of Lanzhou University.
Researcher Kang outlined the disciplinary framework of cryosphere chemistry, providing a comprehensive explanation of background knowledge regarding the composition of the atmosphere and its chemical constituents. He discussed the sources and processes of cryosphere chemical components, the climatic and environmental effects of cryosphere chemistry, as well as glacier chemistry, permafrost chemistry, river and lake ice chemistry, and sea ice chemistry. He emphasized the importance of field observation, experimental techniques, high-tech applications, and the development of cryosphere models, achieving an integrated study of cryosphere science and promoting its rapid advancement. Additionally, he shared insights from the core sampling process of the Everest Glacier and his work in Antarctica, guiding students into the world of ice and snow, allowing them to experience nature and enjoy the beauty of the frozen environment.
