June 13, 2024From June 3 to 5, the "International Symposium on Hydrology and Water Resources Management in Arid Regions" was successfully held at Lanzhou University. The symposium was jointly organized by the Center for Dryland Watershed Science and Water Resources Research and the Department of Hydraulic Engineering at Lanzhou University. Attendees included Professor Lee Brown from the School of Geography at the University of Leeds, Deputy Director of water@leeds (the world's largest water research center), Senior Researcher Heye Bogena from Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany, head of TERENO (Terrestrial Environmental Observatories), and several distinguished scholars from Lanzhou University. The symposium was chaired by Professor Chansheng He, Director of the Center for Dryland Watershed Science and Water Resources Research at Lanzhou University, with nearly 100 faculty members and students participating in the offline lectures.

Professor Lee Brown delivered two comprehensive reports titled "Ecosystem Functional Processes in Changing River Systems" and "River Biodiversity Responses to Flow Modification." Senior Researcher Heye Bogena presented two insightful reports on "Fundamentals and Applications of Cosmic-ray Neutron Sensing" and "Long-term Ecohydrological Effects of a Forest Restoration Measure." Lanzhou University scholars, including Professor Baoqing Zhang, Associate Professor Lanhui Zhang, and Junior Researchers Jie Tian, Lei Tian, Xuejin Wang, and Dr. Xuefeng Xu, delivered engaging presentations on topics such as "Advances in Eco-hydrological Processes in Arid Regions" and "Effects of Large-scale Ecological Restoration Projects."

Discussion and Exchange

Following the presentations, Professor Lee E. Brown and Senior Researcher Heye Bogena engaged in in-depth discussions with the master's and doctoral students about their research directions and progress, providing constructive feedback on each student's work. Additionally, both parties explored future academic and research collaborations, as well as potential project applications, with a shared vision for further cooperation in hydrology and water resources management in arid regions.
