Kang Shaozhong is a famous agricultural soil and water engineer and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He is currently the director of the China Agricultural Water Research Center of China Agricultural University, and the director of the National Field Scientific Observation and Research Station of Efficient Water Use for Agriculture in Wuwei Oasis in Gansu Province. He is also a member of the Presidium of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a member of the Advisory Committee of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the president of the China Agricultural Water Saving and Rural Water Supply Technology Association, the chairman of the Agricultural Engineering Professional Teaching Steering Committee of National Colleges and Universities, the leader of the Water-saving Agriculture Expert Guidance Group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Water Resources, the honorary chairman of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering, and the vice chairman of the National Irrigation and Drainage Commission of China. He has been engaged in the research of efficient water use and water resources in agriculture for a long time, and the research results have developed the theory of water-carbon cycle and crop water consumption calculation method in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum in arid areas, created a theory and technical system of water-saving and high-efficiency irrigation based on crop life water demand information, established a comprehensive technical model for the integrated regulation and control of water, fertilizer and medicine for major crops in the Hexi corridor, revealed the ecological environmental impact of large-scale human water activities, and created the theory and application mode of ecologically oriented rational allocation and regulation of water resources at the watershed scale in arid areas. It has greatly improved the efficiency of regional agricultural water use, and promoted the scientific and technological progress and discipline development in the field of agricultural water and soil engineering.
He has presided over more than 40 national and provincial scientific research projects, published 16 academic works and teaching materials, and published more than 500 academic papers, including more than 200 papers included in SCI, and was continuously selected into Elsevier's "2014-2021 China Highly Cited Scholars List". He won 1 ICID International Agricultural Water Saving Technology Innovation Outstanding Contribution Award in 2006 (the only winner in the world that year), 1 first prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 3 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 1 second prize of National Natural Science Award; 2 second prizes of National Excellent Teaching Achievement Award and 1 special prize of National Postgraduate Education Achievement (the only special prize of the year), and was selected as the 2018 China Graduate Education Quality Person (the only winner in this year). He has been awarded the titles of National Education System Model Worker, National Model Teacher, Beijing Advanced Worker, etc., and won the title of "National Model of Teaching and Education" in 2022.
